SOUNDSTAINABILITY

ENGLISH ITALIANO FRANÇAIS DEUTSCH

Sound is much more of an immersive and relational phenomena than we are accustomed to believing and usually admitting. There is no doubt that environmental sound represents a highly specific mode to learn about the world and its quality is a vital condition for human beings and for other animal species.

Sound surrounds us and we create it. Animals use sound, producing it and obtaining information from it: moving through spaces, feeding, reproducing, defending themselves, playing. Humans extend this use to culture and its symbolic forms, within which sound plays a fundamental role. Sound is, indeed, part of our environmental systems and the listening and production of sounds register, reveal, and modify the processes within these systems.
It is therefore important to pay attention to the present and future state of the sound world, to understand its equilibrium and ask if and why it is in a reciprocal relationship with the macro-processes of environmental, social and economic development. The sustainability of this reciprocal relationship is an essential prerogative today, that is the capacity of satisfying today’s needs without compromising the ability to do the same in the future.
To listen, considering realty through an acoustic and multisensorial paradigm, in order to assess and build the planet’s future equilibria becomes a fundamental condition to be able to guarantee this principle of maintenance. This may involve a shift from considering realty through a principally “retinic” paradigm, where it is a static image, in which we are immerged and engaged in a complex system of relationships.

The XI International Symposium on Soundscape, organized by the FKL-Forum Klanglandschaft in collaboration with SUPSI - Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana through the Am.As project (Ambienti in Ascolto), RSI Radio Televisione Svizzera di Lingua Italiana, and UNIL Università di Losanna, aims to initiate an interdisciplinary dialogue that examines the use of the acoustic paradigm, eventual or current, in the times and places we are living in, with the idea of a sustainable present and future in mind.

We invite researchers, artists, associations, stakeholders and interested groups, to participate by presenting a proposal related to one or more of the specific from those suggested below.

THEMES

1. Listen globally, act locally. Education as action.
An attention to listening and developing a “trained ear” to listen can in itself, like a potential tool, lead to an improvement in the human/environment relational capacity, and between a person and their environment. For example, active listening to natural catastrophes can activate strategies of defense and resilience both on a territorial level and on an individual and psychological level.
How do these processes take place in formal and informal teaching and training practices? Are there examples? How does the soundscape fit in with a learning environment?

2. Sound, power, social justice.
The term to listen, in the sense of understanding, involves cognitive and emotional participation and sharing, a disposition towards the interlocutor. Listening to sound emissions from disadvantaged communities can for example lead to a greater understanding of their demands and therefore increased inclusion. On the other hand, sound can also activate power dynamics aiming to exclude and repress social and human needs. What virtuous actions can and must be adopted by an acoustic community for an acoustic community?

3. The sounds of places. New acoustic spaces and new forms of representation.
The rapid changes that are ongoing profoundly modify places, and their sounds: the sound of growth reduces the liveability of urban and work spaces, the pandemic event on the other hand altered the sound/noise relationship in our cities, desertification signals new, unreally quiet spaces, new dwelling styles – focused on nature, a rediscovery of internal spaces, etc. – inaugurate novel spaces of quiet living. There are many other transformations underway and they all contribute to the modification of acoustic cartography. What implications do they have for the acoustic and sound design of buildings and cities affected by the demand for sustainable living? How can sound contribute to a more ethical territorial narrative aiming to develop new models of local development and sustainable tourism? What happens to the spirit of a place when it is abandoned?

4. Production and consumption in artistic practices.
The practice of artistic production, whether of sound or not, often are not alien to forms of accumulation. The uninterrupted production of sound signals, of sound objects and products accumulate in an increasingly crammed and crowded world, in which the very same informational process leans towards collapse. This informational explosion-implosion is due to the excess flow of data for a type of channel with intrinsic, physiological and social limits that cannot grow at the same pace as the potential offered by fluid and telematic communication. We are talking about human limits with respect to perception and attention capacity. Also, even the most independent artistic practices are nearly always englobed in a communication and market dynamic that reflects traditional consumption models. How does artistic production confront these issues?

5. Storytelling with sound. The language of media and audio-based narration.
Accounts of the present and its imbalances are increasingly told through the filter of audio-based formats (podcast, radio, audiovisuals, sound installations etc.). What specificity does sound have in these narrations? Which models can contribute to developing ethical forms of storytelling?

6. Sound as an ecological indicator.
How does the world of sound offer, or is able to offer, interesting tools for environmental monitoring, to create predictive models, that can contribute to the above-mentioned ecological breakthrough? Today’s technology is able to detect the territorial and environmental characteristics with great precision. How much data and which data from the sound environment is used to propose solutions, and what sort of improvements are proposed, what learnings in developing strategies are based on these tools? Are there any examples, best practices, accrued in this field, and how much do they impact the actions of the ecological turn?

7. Human/non-human. The sound of biodiversity, beyond Anthropocene.
Anthropocentrism, which characterises the human being and his view of himself, is reflected in the concept of soundscape, that from its very theorization places the human being at the centre of the sound-space relationship, being designated as the only conscious listener and producer (and therefore responsible being) of sound and the only legitimate being able to constantly redesign this relationship at will.
Abandoning this perspective, means redesigning, even before sound, the boundaries of hearing and the audible, engaging in the process any being existing on the planet and in the sound environment, as a set of complex relationships. Which models and practices can contribute to this redesign?

At FKL Symposia scientific, poetic or artistic proposals are given equal importance. The partnership between SUPSI, RSI, UNIL and FKL, adopts this interdisciplinary approach to enable the emergence of novel visions of how sound and listening can contribute to our lives and worlds. We wish to favour experimental situations.

SUBMISSIONS

Authors, musicians, scientists, researchers, artists, students, can send proposals in the form of presentations, soundworks and compositions which can be both acousmatic and instrumental, field recordings, radioworks, sound installations, video, listening walks. Creative proposals can consist of the invention of games that forsee, in the way they take place or the game itself, the use of sound and listening
Photography, maps, recording of the locations used for the installation, musical performance and the games will be available from 25th January 2023 at the following address: www.paesaggiosonoro.it/soundstainability/spaces.html

The deadline for submissions is 31 March 2023.

FKL
Forum Klanglandschaft (FKL) - Forum for the soundscape - is a non-profit association that brings together people who, although coming from different disciplines, are interested in listening and responsible management of the acoustic environment. FKL was born from the impulse given by the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology created in 1993 and functions as an information and contact platform at the European level. FKL conducts and supports activities in the fields of science, art and education that contribute to raising awareness for the acoustic environment and to open and active listening. In the field of urban planning, it supports initiatives aimed at a conscious use of sound spaces and times. The members of FKL are involved in acoustic environmental monitoring, acoustic design, the soundscape created by new media and artistic activities based on interaction with environmental sounds and rhythms. Currently, FKL members are mainly from Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy

SUPSI
The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is one of the nine universities of applied sciences recognised by the Swiss Confederation. The theme of soundscapes is developed, according to multiple aspects and perspectives, by the Department of Formation and Learning, the Department of Innovative Technologies, the Department of Environment Construction and Design and the Accademia Teatro Dimitri. In addition, the 11th International FKL Symposium is one of the multiplier events of the international cooperation project "AMAS - Ambienti in Ascolto" (AMAS - Listening Environments) implemented by SUPSI's Department of Formation and Learning, the University of Caxias and Fernfachhochschule Schweiz, with the contribution of the Carte Blanche Fund of the Movetia agency.

RSI
RSI is the Italian-speaking file of the SSR, the Swiss Public Broadcasting Service Company. It is therefore aimed primarily at the Canton of Ticino and the four valleys of the Italian-speaking Grisons, as well as at Italian speakers in the rest of the country. It produces and distributes Italian-language audio and audio-video content throughout Switzerland on two T/ channels - LA1 and LA 2 - and three radio networks - Rete Uno, Rete Due and Rete Tre. RSI also provides an increasingly important online and social offering.
It is a pleasure for RSI to host the FKL | SUPSI | UNIL symposium in the year of the institution's 90th anniversary celebrations..

UNIL
The Academy, the forerunner of the UNIL, was founded in 1537. Its vocation at that time was to train ministers for the church. The university enjoyed a certain renown due to the fact that it was the only French-language Protestant school of theology.
As the centuries passed, the number of faculties increased and diversified until, in 1890, the Academy received the name and status of a university.
In 1970, the university moved progressively from the old city of Lausanne, around the Cathedral and the Château, to its present site at Dorigny. The end of the 20th century witnessed the beginnings of an ambitious project aiming at greater co-operation and development among the French-speaking universities of Lausanne, Geneva and Neuchâtel, together with the EPFL. In 2003, two new faculties were founded concentrating on life and human sciences: the Faculty of Biology and Medicine; and the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment.

SOUNDSTAINABILITY

TEMI

1. Ascoltare globale, agire locale. Educazione come azione.

5. Raccontare con il suono. Linguaggi dei media e narrazioni audio-based.

6. Suono come indicatore ecologico.
