SOUNDSCAPES & SOUND IDENTITIES
"Soundscapes & Sound Identities" is the seventh international symposium on soundscape organized by the FKL (Forum Klanglandschaft)
The symposium is hosted by festival Portobeseno 2015.
There exists doubtlessly an acoustic identity of places, even in those which, due to the increasing uniformity of the contemporary world, end up being “non-places”; acoustic identity may appear standardized, but is nevertheless present.
The term “acoustic climate” is often used in environmental physics in defining the parameters and quantitative data which characterize an acoustic environment, obviously this term inevitably hints at an idea of identity linked to its measurable aspects.
Bioacoustics and ecology deal with, among other things, the way the acoustic environment, the specific sonic utterances and hearing characteristics of living species represent the identity of a given species, and the way they co-exist and live together.
Human and social sciences (anthropology, history, sociology, ethnomusicology) on their side examine the various practices of acoustic communication that may characterize a given territory, a social group, a historical period, or even a future perspective, and here comes into play the way human being relates to other individuals and the environment, the way in which he represents his/her identity through the sounds he/she produces or listens to.
And also the sonic forms through which an individual and a collective represent themselves and which are dealt with by music and art, together with architecture and electro-acoustic engineering, inevitably imply a multi-faceted discussion of identity.
I there exists an acoustic identity it exists for somebody who perceives it as such. Speaking of identity thus means speaking of the listener and not only of what produces the sound or affects its diffusion (see the aural dimension of architecture and the ensuing sound effects). The concept of identity, and in particular of sonic identity, may be looked at as a vital dimension in the problems of co-existence and conflict between different human groups, between living beings of different species, between living beings and the natural environment, thus as a problem or a form of ecology.
What are for us the aspects that give a context an acoustic identity, or when are we able to speak of it? Are there sounds, practices, contexts particularly apt to express such an identity, and why?
The variety of the sonic forms of identity result in that which only in a macroscopic, or better, macro-acoustic sense may be thought of as an identity of a soundscape.
The international FKL symposium intends to offer an occasion for discussing these issues, for stimulating a reflection and dialogue within the acoustic community in the attempt to define, or to share as much as possible the basis on which we build our ideas, and confer qualities of identity to the sonic contexts in which we live or which are around us.
FKL (Forum Klanglandschaft - Forum for the soundscape) is a European association that wants to serve as a platform for contact between people from different disciplines that deal with the soundscape and acoustic spaces.
The FKL was born as a result of the impetus given by the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology WFAE (Vancouver, BC) was formed in 1993 based on research carried out in 70 years. The FKL is a non-profit organization, is open to all those interested in listening and sound environmental stewardship.
Every two years FKL organizes its conference in a different European city.
PORTOBESENO
Portobeseno is a cultural project founded in 2004 which works on 2.0 multimedia archives, art projects and laboratories dealing with issues of the territory, the landscape and individual and collective memories.
The projects are based on narrative interviews, ethnographic research, didactical laboratories for schools, reflections on oral memory and on the factual knowledge of the territory, on the exploration of soundscapes and their relation to the web through the development of virtual maps, creative blogs, geoblogs, social projects for the web.
These projects are integrated in the festival “Portobeseno, a journey to historical and web sources “ which produces events (ranging from theatre to electro-acoustic concerts) and innovative multimedia installations. The Portobeseno festival furthermore hosts discussions on authors rights, creative sharing, the real / virtual perception of the territory, from the discovery of a trail in the woods to net surfing.

"Soundscapes & Sound identities" è il settimo simposio internazionale sul paesaggio sonoro indetto da FKL (Forum Klanglandschaft).
Il simposio è ospitato nell'ambito del festival Portobeseno 2015.
Esiste senza dubbio un'identità sonora dei luoghi, pur laddove, per gli aspetti di omologazione sempre più diffusa nel mondo contemporaneo, essi finiscono per essere dei "non luoghi": l'identità sonora può apparire standardizzata, massificata, ma non per questo assente.
Il termine "clima acustico" è spesso impiegato in fisica ambientale per definire i parametri e dei valori quantitativi che caratterizzano un ambiente sonoro, pertanto questo concetto ci riporta inevitabilmente all'idea di identità di un ambiente per i suoi aspetti misurabili e codificati.
La bioacustica e l'ecologia si occupano, fra le altre cose, di come l'ambiente sonoro, le peculiari emissioni sonore e caratteristiche uditive, delle specie viventi rappresentano l'identità della specie, in quale modo coesistono e convivono tra loro.
Da parte loro le scienze umane (antropologia, storia, sociologia, etnomusicologia) indagano le varie pratiche di comunicazione sonora che possono caratterizzare un territorio, un gruppo sociale, un periodo storico, o una prospettiva temporale anche futura, e qui entra in gioco il modo in cui l'essere umano si mette in relazione con altri individui e con l'ambiente, in che modo esso rappresenta la propria identità attraverso i suoni che produce o che ascolta.
Infine le forme sonore di rappresentazione dell'io e della collettività, di cui la musica e l'arte, insieme all'architettura e all'ingegneria elettroacustica si occupano a loro volta, comportano inevitabilmente, talvolta in modo implicito, un confronto con il tema dell'identità, declinandolo nei modi più diversi.
Se esiste un'identità sonora esiste per qualcuno che la sente come tale. Parlare dell'identità significa dunque parlare dell'ascoltatore oltre ché di ciò che produce il suono o ne influenza la propagazione (si consideri la dimensione aurale dell'architettura e degli effetti sonori). Il concetto di identità, e di identità sonora in particolare, può essere inteso come una dimensione presente e vitale nelle problematiche di coesistenza, di convivenza e di conflitto, tra gruppi umani diversi, tra esseri viventi appartenenti a specie diverse, tra gli esseri viventi e il mondo naturale, quindi come problema o come forma di ecologia in atto.
Quali sono per noi gli aspetti che conferiscono ad un contesto un'identità sonora, o quando siamo in grado di parlarne? Esistono suoni, pratiche, contesti particolarmente indentitari e perché?
La varietà di forme sonore dell'identità costituisce ciò che soltanto in un senso macroscopico o meglio macro-acustico è possibile pensare come identità del paesaggio sonoro.
Gli incontri del simposio internazionale FKL vogliono essere un'occasione per confrontarsi su questi temi, per stimolare la riflessione e per dialogare all'interno della comunità acustica nel tentativo di esplicitare, o di condividere per quanto è possibile le basi sulle quali costruiamo le nostre idee, e le attribuzioni di qualità identitarie in relazione ai contesti sonori che abitiamo o che ci circondano.
Il Forum Klanglandschaft (FKL) - Forum per il paesaggio sonoro è una associazione europea che vuole fungere da piattaforma di contatto tra persone provenienti dalle discipline più diverse che si occupano del paesaggio sonoro e degli spazi acustici.
Il FKL è nato in seguito all'impulso dato dal World Forum for Acoustic Ecology WFAE (Vancouver, B.C.) costituitosi nel 1993 sulla base delle ricerche svolte negli anni 70. Il FKL e un'associazione senza scopo di lucro, è aperto a tutti coloro che sono interessati all'ascolto e alla gestione responsabile dell'ambiente acustico.
FKL organizza ogni due anni in una diversa città di Europa il suo convegno.
PORTOBESENO
Portobeseno è un progetto culturale nato nel 2004 che si occupa di archivi multimediali 2.0, progetti artistici e laboratori creativi aventi per oggetto il territorio, il paesaggio e la memoria individuale e collettiva.
I progetti traggono spunto da interviste narrative, ricerche etnografiche, laboratori didattici rivolti alle scuole, da riflessioni sulla memoria orale e sulla conoscenza concreta del territorio, dall’esplorazione dei paesaggi sonori, dalle loro possibili relazioni con il web attraverso lo sviluppo di cartografie virtuali, blog creativi, geoblog, progetti sociali per la Rete.
Tali progetti confluiscono nel festival “Portobeseno, viaggio tra fonti storiche e sorgenti web” che produce spettacoli (dal teatro ai concerti di musica elettroacustica) e installazioni multimediali originali e innovative. Il festival Portobeseno propone inoltre riflessioni sui diritti d’autore, la condivisione creativa e sulla percezione del territorio tra reale e virtuale, dalla scoperta di un sentiero nei boschi alla navigazione virtuale offerta da Internet.
